Boathouse Operator & Paddling InstructorDUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Must love the outdoors and know how to paddle!
Ensure that all rules and regulations are adhered to as they apply to paddling sports.
To have full knowledge of the instructional programs offered and to instruct the appropriate skills/strokes and progression.
To maintain direct contact with patrons and to communicate with them in an effective manner.
To monitor designated waterfront and check boathouse, during all water sport activities. To maintain a safe paddling environment at all times. To be comfortable with children, disabled and elderly to offer assistance for ensuring a safe enjoyable paddle.
To ensure the security of the boathouse area at all times, i.e., all public access locked when the boathouse is not being supervised.
To maintain the cleanliness/organization of the area going above and beyond for the safety of the community.
To be responsible for completing and submitting all necessary forms and reports such as rental agreements, test paddles, statistical reports and other administrative duties as required. To report on paper any difficulties, incidents or complaints immediately to the Program Director.
To maintain all current paddling qualifications necessary for the position.
To have full knowledge of the Canoe Emergency Procedures for the Department of Recreation and to ensure all emergency equipment is available and operational.
To perform the necessary set up and break down of activities for the various paddling program and equipment.
To attend in service training and staff meetings as required.QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must be a minimum of 17 years of age; must be certified paddling instructor and possess a current Basic Life Support CPR certificate and have Standard First Aid. All certificates must be current and a copy must be submitted with resume.Sat 12pm-8pm

Holy Cow Canoe is pleased to offer this new and fun outdoor activity to Fairy Lake. Thinking of something different for date night, girls night out? or something for the kids. Try stand up paddle boarding. We have safe stable SUP boards specially designed for the first time users equipped with a longboard paddle. Fairy lake is a calm and quiet lake perfect to try out your new skills. We have available to you an instructor who can help you with your paddle sport needs.

From Wikipedia; Stand up paddle surfing and stand up paddle boarding (SUP), (Hoe he’e nalu in the Hawaiian language) are sports originating in Hawaii as an off-shoot of surfing. They enable surfers to paddle farther into the ocean than is typical or to paddle standing up as a sport unto itself. A 2013 report called it the outdoor sporting activity with the most first-time participants of any in the United States that year.^[1] Paddlers race on lakes, large rivers and canals, ride breaking waves, and glide over long distances along sea coasts, often using tail winds to aid the trip.

Stand up paddlers wear a variety of wet suits and other clothing, depending on both water and air temperature since most of their time is spent standing on the board.

A related, traditional sport, paddleboarding, is done kneeling on a board and paddling with the hands, similar to a butterfly swimming stroke. The term “paddleboarding” is sometimes incorrectly used to refer to stand up paddle surfing.

Historian and writer Steve West, notes that the contemporary notion of stand up paddle boarding, if attributed to the Waikiki Beach Boys of Oahu during the 1960s, considers that outrigger canoeing should in fact be recognised as the direct link between the idea of standing on a board and propelling it with a canoe paddle, seeing as these two primary skills (board riding and paddling) were merely being combined, by people who had traditionally grown up around both skills as part of their cultural right of passage.

“Get the camera!!” I heard from residents of Acton on the opening day of our second location. What a day after the several months organizing the new project with the help of the Dufferin Rural Community Centre, and the Agricultural Society. We are very excited to offer this new program at Prospect Park to the Town of Halton Hills.

“We’re pleased to have this service offered to local residents” said Mayor Rick Bonnette. “Canoeing on Fairy Lake offers families a great opportunity to learn more about nature while enjoying this amazing resource and being active.”

We will be reporting back to the town at the end of season and hope that this paddling season will bring lots of great memories for everyone. It is our hope the townspeople will enjoy this new safe fun family program that all kids will enjoy!

We have visitors from all over the provinces and the United States come and visit us at the Acton facility. You can find easy paddling in most provincial parks. Explore meandering rivers for great opportunities to see wildlife. The Bonnechere River makes for a great family paddle, close to shore, interesting vegetation and the chance to see turtles, fish, ducks and deer. The family cabins at Bonnechere make for a great getaway! Or check out Emily northeast of Toronto, a perfect spot for novice paddlers and the wetlands along the wide Pigeon River provide a habitat for many unique frogs and birds. If you do not have a canoe, you can rent one at the Park Store.

Motorboat free lakes provide peaceful, easy paddling for novice paddlers and nature enthusiasts. The collection of picturesque lakes in Esker Lakes, the quiet, pretty Kettle’s Lake at Awenda or the peaceful waters of MacLeod in northwestern Ontario offer a relaxing option for a day of canoeing. Some parks like Silent Lake offer great home bases to explore. Try a quiet and relaxing paddle across the 2.5 km long Silent Lake. The adjoining Quiet Lake and Soft Lakes can be accessed (depending on water levels) by completing a short portage.

More parks are beginning to offer “Learn to” programs – including Earl Rowe where you can learn to paddle. Be sure to check out “What Happening” highlights for each park. And park staff are excellent sources for advice on paddling and services available.
